The Staunton-design chess piece set "Zagreb" represents not only chess pieces but also serves as a historically significant symbol of the elegance of the royal game. Its design pays tribute to the illustrious era of chess in the mid-20th century when worldwide chess tournaments captivated millions of chess enthusiasts.

The centrepiece of this chess set is unquestionably the knight, whose extraordinary design is inspired by Russian art and culture. It features an intricately woven horse's neck, radiating strength and tenacity, thus capturing the gaze of every observer and player. However, it's not just the knight that stands out: the other pieces in the set are also exceptional. The king, queen, and bishop carry elements of the opposing side's colours, which is rather unusual and rare in chess pieces.

Each individual chess piece has been expertly turned and hand-carved with the utmost precision, supplemented with weights and felt underlay. This ensures not only excellent grip and handling but also preserves the chessboard itself. The choice of boxwood in its natural form and ebonized form not only gives them a deep black appearance but also impresses with their durability. Given the deep black colour and high contrast of these woods, it is advisable to use a chessboard made from similarly dark to black woods, such as wenge. This way, an appealing colon harmony can be achieved.

With a king's height of just under 95 mm, this set meets the requirement for tournament chess pieces and can easily find its place in clubs and private collections. Additional queens are included for both colours, allowing pawn promotions to proceed without the need for replacement pieces.

For an optimal playing experience, it is advisable to use a chessboard with square sizes ranging from 55 to 58 mm. On such a board, the pieces are displayed perfectly, and the harmonious size relationship between the pieces and the chessboard ensures an aesthetic and appealing presentation.
